I am not sure how this happened, but during a transfer from the online Word to the program on my computer, the spell checker disabled itself (and refuses to turn on, even when I fixed all the settings in options) and got replaced by a 'track changes/accept or decline changes' option that won't turn off no matter what I do (yes, I went into options). I have tried that fixing program suggested for Word 2010, but it wouldn't run due to my system being Windows 10. Please help, this is really annoying in both online and offline versions and this glitch hops with the document, screwing with other computers when I edit on them. And yes, I did F7 to check this and did it ten times.
The option was set to allow spell checking. When you say that it is not working, describe exactly what you are observing. I am assuming you mean that obviously misspelled words are not being flagged. This is most likely a proofing language problem. Select (or create and select) a misspelled word. Then under the Review tab, click on the 'Language' button.
Make sure there is no check in the 'Do not check spelling & grammar' box. Assuming I'm right about the erroneous language just go ahead & close the dialog. Select all of the document (Command+A) then open the dialog again to choose your appropriate language formatting.
Pick 'Select Proofing Language' from the short menu. Look at the bottom of the dialog that appears. If the checkbox that says 'Do not check spelling or grammar' is not empty, click on it until it is clear. Does this make a difference? If it does make a difference, then Ctrl+A to select all text in your document and repeat the language selection. For more about the Spelling Checker see: If the problem occurs regularly, it is probably a problem with one or more Style definitions.
If this is the problem, write back for more help. Charles Kenyon Madison, WI. Hi, Does the Spell Checker only not work in Word 2016? How about other Office application such as Outlook or Excel? What's your settings for spell check and grammar check in Word 2016?

Charles Kenyon Madison, WI. I am also having the same problem. It is with the 'Do not check spelling/grammar' button. I go in and uncheck it and hit set as default and/or ok and then go back in and it is checked again.
It will not hold the button as off. This setting is by character, not by document.
It is not a setting for the program nor for the document. It can be in a document's styles.
See my previous post marked as an answer. Which version of Word? Which operating system? The proofing language settings are useful, but for those unfamiliar with how they work, they can be a problem.
